Imagine heading to the dentist with high hopes for a winning smile and walking away not only toothless but in unbearable pain. For Noël Kouici, this isn’t a nightmare – it’s his reality, after falling victim to a dental scandal that has sent shockwaves through France.
The Promise of the Perfect Smile
Noël Kouici never expected his life would be turned upside down by a dentist’s chair. Living in Consolat, in the northern districts of Marseille, he once had a regular dentist who was effective, but notorious for running late. Waiting two hours for an appointment that dragged on was hardly ideal, but his dental health was in such decline that he could hardly be picky. With teeth already coming loose, a temporary lower device, and a couple of cavities – not to mention coming from a large family where even toothpaste felt like a luxury – Noël’s luck with teeth had always been on the thinner side.
But then, word-of-mouth worked its magic. Colleagues from his neighborhood recommended Dr. Lionel Guedj. Appointments? No problem – you could get in at 7 AM sharp.

- Quick turnaround: in and out in half an hour.
- He wasn’t even the first through the door!
- Dr. Guedj seemed to work from dawn till late.
The real hook? Guedj promised a movie-star smile at an unbeatable price. “I’ll give you pearly whites, a dazzling smile. Don’t even worry about the money,” he said.
The Start of a Dental Nightmare
That’s where the trouble began. Noël described what followed not as treatment, but as butchery. At first, things seemed alright – until the day Guedj drilled into Noël’s front teeth without anesthesia. “He poured the product to kill the nerve straight onto my teeth. It was a Friday in 2009. I’ll never forget it.” That weekend was agony. He couldn’t even bite into a simple beignet at a festival in Nîmes. Eating? Impossible. Opening his mouth? Out of the question. When Monday came, he rushed back to the practice desperate for help, wracked by abominable pain.
But once in the system, it was hard to escape. Dr. Guedj soon filed, shaved, and destroyed even Noël’s healthy teeth. Within just a month – with visits two or three times a week – practically every tooth was gone. There were days Noël went home straight after leaving the clinic, simply unable to function.
Unending Pain and Social Aftershocks
At first, he managed. Then bits of enamel started breaking off. The next year and a half? “It was madness.” Abscesses erupted in his gums, leaving him baffled; after all, he’d been promised a pain-free future. As soon as the scandal broke in the press, Noël realized he wasn’t alone. But his situation became even more desperate. Every dentist he visited would turn him away after learning he was a former patient of Dr. Guedj. “Sorry, your case is too serious. I can’t take the risk.”
Left on his own, Noël began performing dental self-surgery – draining his own abscesses. The suffering, he says, is immense and ongoing. For show and tell, Noël touches his left canine – five teeth wiggle, on the brink of falling out. He exposes his gums, missing molars both above and below. Eating bread is hard, chewing meat impossible (he swallows it whole!), and everything thick cuts the insides of his cheeks. Even talking brings pain. His canines once as close together as anyone else’s now have an unmistakable gap. The loss of his back teeth has left everything misaligned.
The misfortune doesn’t stop at his mouth. Noël developed back pain so severe he needed an osteopath. Without even opening his mouth, the osteopath deduced the problem: “You’re missing teeth here and there.” His dental devastation caused not just migraines but even eye pain. Years have passed, but relief hasn’t come.
The Hard Road to Recovery and Justice
Now aged 52, Noël faces major surgery at the Conception Hospital where all remaining teeth will be removed. Dentures are his best option, because, as he says, “With what’s been done to me, the bone by my sinuses is destroyed.” To imagine dental implants, he first needs bone grafting. In France, implants for a full mouth are far too expensive, leading him to look abroad – Hungary seems promising, but the cost still stands at a staggering 15,000 euros.
Noël is crystal clear: “You can’t take advantage of the system, hurting those with few means.” People with money would have walked away the moment things seemed off, but many victims, struggling financially, trusted promises and lost everything.
What does he want? Accountability. For Dr. Guedj to pay for the damage caused and to help restore the victims’ smiles, literally. If he’s toothless when he testifies in court after his upcoming hospital operation, he’ll show everyone what’s left. At 52, being left without teeth is a tragedy he wants the court – and the guilty party – to see firsthand.
If there’s any lesson here, it’s this: when a dental deal sounds too good to be true, check twice. Your smile is worth more than any shortcut.
